Chapter 9: A Father's Redemption

ChiChi waited impatiently for Goku to return; he had just left all of a sudden, saying there were things that needed to be taken care of. Gohan and the others had gone off somewhere to sulk, leaving her alone with Chibbi Trunks. "Poor Bulma." she whispered quietly, "She must really miss you."

There was a rustle in the grass that nearly caused ChiChi to drop the infant, she let out a sigh of relief when Goku imereged looking somewhat guilty, "Sorry." he said sheepishly.

ChiChi sighed in releif, "It's all right." she whispered.

Goku smiled, "Why don't you get some rest," he offered, "I'll watch Trunks for a while."

ChiChi looked at him suspeciously, but then smiled; she needed a break. She handed Trunks to Goku and walked of into the Capsule house for rest. Goku waited a moment, then motioned for someone to come out. Vejiita walked out, grummbling, "Baka, if anyone were to see this!"

"Don't worry!" Goku said, "No one's here!" He smiled as he held out the infant to Vejiita.

Vejiita snorted at first; but then, the childs eyes opened and locked upon Vejiita. A tiny hand reached out as the baby made small noises. "Would you look at that!" Goku said, amazed.

Vejiita seemed engrossed in the child and without thinking held out a finger. The infant eagarly grasped at the appendage and tugged at it. "Good grip." Vejiita whispered, smiling. He seemed totally oblivous to the other Saiyajin there. Without a thought, he took the child from Goku's arms and held him, "So much like your mother." he whispered.

Goku smiled, "He's got a bit of you in him, although it'll show when he gets older."

Vejiita frowned when he thought of the other Trunks, "He'd better be stronger than him!" he said, Goku shook his head laughing. "I'm sure you'll make sure of that!"

"Damn right I will!"

Goku stopped laughing, and became serious, "Now what?" he asked. Vejiita sighed, "I need to talk to Bulma."

"I know. What about Trunks?"

"I'll take him, she wants to see him." Goku was hesitant, but he wouldn't be able to stop Vejiita if he did try to pull anything, he would just have to trust him. Vejiita turned, "Oh, and Kakarott, if you tell, ANYONE about this, it'll be your head!"

Goku smiled and nodded, "My lips are sealed!"

Vejiita looked at him suspiciously, but then took off. Goku turned and nearly suffered a heart attack when he saw ChiChi watching him out of the window, the shock on her face melting into a knowing smile. "Goku," she whispered to herself, "you never cease to amaze me."

Trunks held Aya's hand as they approached the gate of the city. "Listen, we're going to have to keep a low profile. We don't want their scouters to recognize us."

Aya nodded, Trunks was about to open the door, but he stopped, "He's coming back to the base, we'll wait a few minutes before we go on to the palace." he turned to Aya and squeezed her hand, "You realize," he said, "we may not get out of this alive."

She nodded, "It's a risk I'm willing to take. I have nothing to lose."

Trunks looked at her with new admiration, he would be a fool to think her weak. "Then let's get ready." he looked away, preparing for what could be his last battle.

Bulma was tired of everything and everyone. Several soldiers had come and gone; some looking for the king, and some just checking on her. All of them seemed quite distraught when they saw her in the state she was in. They were not used to the situation, some went in search of help while others just stood and stared and some, just yelled at her for being weak.

Bulma ignored all of them; eventually, they stopped coming and she was alone; which was all she wanted. She crawled to the bed and curled up in a fetal position. She didn't have enough strength left to cry, so she hugged herself and tried to sleep so she could dream of her son. She was almost completely asleep when the balcony doors slid open.

He watched her for a moment, hoping the child in his arms would stay quiet. He moved noiselessly toward the bed and smiled, she was always so peaceful when she was sleeping.

Bulma stirred, sensing his presence. Her eyes shot open, fixing a glare on him that quickly vanished when her eyes fell upon the child in his arms. "Trunks?" she asked, her voice cracking.

Vejiita nodded, and handed the child out to her. She eagarly took her son, and rocked him back and forth, "Kakarott..." he didn't say another word, Bulma cut him off with a passionate kiss.

"Thank you." she whispered; a single tear slid down her cheek. "Thank you so much."

Vejiita was speechless for a moment, 'I'll never understand women.' he thought. "Bulma," he said quietly, 'Damn, can I do this?' She looked at him, waiting for him to continue, "I want, to be with you forever." 'Damn, why can't I just say it?' "So, I'm going to wish for you to be immortal." 'Shit, I can't say it!'

Bulma looked away, saddness washed over her face, "Vejiita," she said quietly, "I don't want to be immortal. I want to live a life like everyone else, and die like everyone else; and I want you to be a part of that, but as long as you're immortal, it can't be that way!"

'Why?' Vejiita's mind screamed, but he said nothing. He turned away, he had to do some more thinking.

He was about to fly out the window again, when a call came in, "My king," a voice said, "Two rebels have come to the base, we have apprehended them and are awaiting your command."

Vejiita sighed, knowing very well who the two were. "Come with me Bulma." he said quietly.

Bulma followed, rocking Trunks back and forth. 'Oh Dende,' she prayed, 'now what?'

For once, there was no response as Chikyuu's guardian was watching the earth with a smile.

Trunks and Aya waited patiently; their arms bound and guards surrounding them. Trunks didn't know why they went to such a fuss, it wasn't like they had put up too much of a fight, this was all part of their plan.

The soldiers stared in shock as Vejiita and Bulma walked down the hallway, they seemed most surprised by the infant she was cradling. Aya's jaw almost hit the floor as the two walked in.

'So much for my plan.' Trunks thought. Bulma stared in wonder, then smiled. "Untie them." Vejiita ordered. The soldiers hesitated, "Well?" Vejiita asked, he was clearly impatient. The guards quickly untied them. "Good," Vejiita said, "now leave us alone."

The soldiers rushed out of the room, not wanting to upset their king. Vejiita turned to Trunks, "You're mission is complete, return to your time and your family."

"What are you saying?" Trunks asked.

Vejiita ignored him, turning to Aya, "I will undo all that I have done. Your father will be returned."

Aya began to weep and hugged the nearest person, which was Trunks. Trunks blushed, he understood now. "Thank you," he said quietly, "Dad."

Vejiita frowned, "Whatever." Bulma smiled, "You'd better get going, I'm sure your mother is waiting."

"As is your father." Bulma added, smiling.

Trunks nodded, "Thank you." he said quietly, he hugged Bulma.

"No," Bulma said, "thank YOU."

Trunks shook his head, "I didn't do anything, it was you."

Bulma smiled, and hugged the child in her arms. Aya smiled as well, "I'll miss you Trunks."

Trunks blushed, "I'll miss you too."

Aya smirked, "I'll be in your time, so don't worry."

"It won't be the same."

Aya rolled her eyes, and then, kissed him. Vejiita growled and Bulma chuckled, Trunks blushed "I'd...um..better be going!"

The five of them escorted him back to his time machine where the rest of the Z-senshi were waiting. Vejiita glared at Kakarott, "I told you to keep your mouth shut!"

"I didn't say a word!" Goku said innocently. ChiChi smiled, and Goku hugged her, "but you never said anything about ChiChi!"

Vejiita began to curse in his native language and the rest just laughed. Trunks said his good-byes and then left for home. Bulma held Trunks tightly, and Vejiita just stared at the place where the machine was, "My son, he whispered, "I'll always be proud of you."
